I am running super behind on everything this year, from recs, to letters and everything else. So just a very quick note to say that Snowflake Challenge is running again. It's a really fun way to get to know other people, particularly on Dreamwidth and to generate some interesting thoughts through January. I really recommend it and would love to see some familiar (and new) faces.

I'm terrible at signing up for exchanges, I dither for ages and fret about the thought of having to write a letter. So for once, what I've written, thanks to taking up some pinch hits outstrips the number of what I've received. In reverse chronological exchange order therefore:

Relationshipping

What I got: In medias res (always in the middle of something), The Haunting of Hill House, Shirley/Theo, Summary: Shirley and Theo avoid a touchy subject (or not).

What I thought: That feeling when you get the rarepair incest femslash fic you've been hoping for :___: angry, sharp and pointy Crain sisters, with a kiss that takes place while someone has their hands buried (literally) in someone else's chest.

What I gave: The Preservation of the World, Ginger Snaps, Brigitte/Ginger, Summary: no joke, I just realised while typing this up...that I forgot to put a summary on AO3. In brief, AU from the end - Ginger and Brigitte live in the woods together.
What I thought: I've been waiting ages to write a fic for Ginger Snaps, and this is a Stripy special - plenty of shitty jokes to go around!

Two pinch hits written respectively for the SAME (Short August Medieval Exchange) flash exchange and the Stephen King exchange

SAME: he today that sheds his blood with me, A Knight's Tale, Will/ Edward the Black Prince, Summary: The Black Prince can always count on William to rise to his challenge.
What I thought: This was a ton of fun to write. It involves blowjobs, stupid banter between Will and his friends and my personal favourite thing: single combat

King of Exchanges, fears that I may cease to be, The Long Walk, Ray Garraty/Peter McVries, Summary: Olson breaks the line. McVries and Garraty run.
What I thought: just about the fastest I've written a fic this year, thanks pinch hit deadline! A pleasure though.

My New Years Resolution fic, written merely one year late

What I thought: How my immensely kind and patient beta did not storm across a sea to throw me out a window when writing this is beyond me. Thank you

Remix Revival Madness

What I got: Blood Alliances (a Heart Blood remix), Supernatural, Dean/Benny, Summary: Benny's thought about it in the course of their journey through the vast forested landscape of Purgatory.
What I thought: This was a remix of my Dean/Benny fic which involved Dean thoroughly topping Benny in Purgatory, and I am pleased as hell that my remixer kept the spirit of that while creating an amazing story. Loved it.

Trick or Treat (I was lucky enough to get three fics!)

What I got: Tomatoes, lettuce and a burger, Supernatural, gen, Summary: Dean is making Sam a burger, something is off.
What I thought: delicious creepy little horror fic - just perfect for a Halloween trick
What I got: Fox-Fire, The Terror, Crozier/Fitzjames, Summary: “I like my little Fox very much,” Francis said with half-a-smile. “It has always done well by me.”
What I thought: I love these two so much, and this was a delightful byplay between them complete with rescue
What I got: The Litany of Hatred, The Favourite, Abigail/Sarah, Summary: A beast stalks the palace. Sarah tells Abigail about it.
What I thought: My favourite messed up couple, this is subtle and vicious with an amazing turn of phrase

What I gave: Bird on a Wire, Top Gun, Iceman/Maverick, Summary: Hiding in plain sight is tough, but Maverick considers himself a master of disguise.
What I thought: One day I will write the Iceman/Mav fic of my dreams, but until then, I enjoyed getting a little snippet of them out there even though I wished it could have been longer.

Fic in a Box (didn't sign up, so this was just a pinch hit)

What I wrote: death, the abyss from where no traveler is permitted to return, Hannibal, Alana Bloom/Beverly Katz, Summary: “You know,” Alana says, mostly a non-sequitur. “You aren’t the first. Is that comforting?” / Beverly pauses over the milk, some people maintain a jug, she sticks to the carton. “Not the first to come back?” she says./ “I was thinking, not the first to die,” Alana replies.

What I thought: I am amused that my first Hannibal fic is so a) so late and b) explicit femslash, but honestly writing someone crawling back out of a grave and having to phone the bank to unfreeze their account is apparently the height of my ambitions

Non-exchange (yes it exists)

a separate moral universe, Supernatural, Sam/Dean, Summary: What Is And What Should Never Be AU. Dean is Sam’s no good big brother who flunked out of school, steals their mom’s silver to pay off his gambling debts, and is drunk more often than not. And he fucks Sam like no one else ever does. / Motels inhabit a separate moral universe is what that world's Stoppard might've said, but didn't.
What I thought: This was a super fun exercise actually - this is very specifically the djinn version of Sam and Dean who we saw from that episode, but I hope bits of real Sam and Dean come through as well. OK, honestly, it's just porn.

RMSE exchange was a whole lot of fun - so many good fics (there's a few recs in previous posts here and here) and I was extremely lucky to receive two amazing stories, both of them for rare, rare canons - an absolutely windfall, one for The History Boys and one for Equilibrium,

I had the pleasure of writing two stories, both of which were extremely different, but both of which were fun to write. The American Psycho fic was a treat that took over my brain and I can safely say this is the only fic where my historical ~~1989~~ research is accurate. The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood fic is lower key and more romantic, also a change for me.

2nd set of RMSE recs

Still making my way through at the pace of a snail, but here are 4 more recs of things I loved, before creator reveals tonight

on a dime, DCU: E, Harvey/Bruce, This is a really amazing look at Harvey and Bruce, both individually and together. It's definitely readable without comics knowledge - I only really know the Nolan films and it made perfect sense to me. It's an insight into a manipulative Bruce and an already unstable Harvey with the seeds of Twoface already there, lashings of class war, hot sex and a fantastic back and forth between them in terms of who holds the power. Definitely worth a read if only for the knowledge that the best way to irritate Harvey Dent is to order him brunch.

Kings and Desperate Men Henry IV/Hal, E, Henry IV Part 1 Another one where you don't need much more than the basic historical understanding of who Henry and Hal are and their relationship (father/son) though the fic is even better if you do know the canon. This is a bleak semi-medieval look at punishment/penance and self-delusion. The sex is hot and bleak, but the real interest is in Henry's self justification of how he rationalises the use of his son.

The Revelation of Brother Eadwine Scriptorium Monk Drawing Dirty Marginalia/Monk in Charge of Illumination Project E, Original Work. This is a delightful medieval story that is beautifully described and gives little backstories to the marginalia we know from manuscripts. The perspective character is a ton of fun, but there's also a lot of emotion to it. Definitely no knowledge of canon needed of course! There's also links to the marginalia at the bottom for some aid in picturing them.

a hatchet with a handle, The Folly of the World, E, Jan/Sander. I don't even know canon for this (though I plan to pick it up) and while I feel that it's probably even better than it already is with canon knowledge, I still really enjoyed it. This is brutal and vicious and definitely heed the tags because they're very literal (yes, it's swordfucking) but the descriptive, visceral quality of the prose is top notch, and the relationship between the two characters is fascinating.

The Rare Male Slash Exchange collection has just opened - can be found here

There's a glut of good things, enough that I'm not even close to finished reading, but here's a few of the ones I've really enjoyed so far.

( The History Boys, Equilibrium, The Sting, Snowpiercer, Heat, A Bit of Fry and Laurie, The Scarlet Pimpernel and Dracula )

Pledge, Snowpiercer, Curtis/Edgar, Explicit. Canon divergent Snowpiercer fic that builds on the world of the film into something as cruelly survival driven and even more human. The relationship in this is so sharp, and Curtis's thoughts so perfect, and the fic draws itself together into something completely inevitable.

Heart Attack Man, Heat, Vincent/Neil, Explicit. Another fic I didn't even know I'd been waiting for! It slots neatly into the world of Heat, but more than that, both Neil and Vincent get wonderful character moments, on top of a really hot sex scene that illuminates the potential nature of the relationship between them. Vincent's dialogue in particular was pitch perfect, but the whole fic is a great read.

All In, The Sting, Johnny/Henry, Mature. Two conmen trying to fool each other and themselves, it's a tale as old as The Sting, and this is a superb addition. There's all that history between them, and the author flips expectations so deftly and with such a lot of emotional impact. The tension is really well dealt with in particular, and there's some really lovely period touches especially in the dialogue.

'Tis Well to Be Bereft, A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Control/Tony, Teen, as funny as the Control/Tony bits in canon, the speech patterns are perfect, the relationship is perfect, the overdone metaphors are absolutely in keeping with canon - well wroth a read.

Eat, Drink and Be Merry Letter

General Likes: (none of these need to be combined and some of them are contradictory, if it’s in the list I love it.)

Us against the world is a favourite dynamic of mine as is finding connections in strange places. I'm very fond of closeness between characters (friendship, honourable enemies etc). Apocalyptic and wartime settings are big for me. I'm a big fan of tough people doing hard things, especially if they have to sacrifice things of value. I’m also a fan of humour and banter, of mentally strong characters who battle through against all odds. I also love vicious characters who will do anything to survive and who have one weakness for someone else.

I like brittleness which isn't fragility, love/friendship that is prized above everything else, sacrifices, fighting and ambition. I also like funny things and veneers of casualness that conceal a lot. My taste runs strongly to stoic individuals who can take and deal out a lot of pain. Competent people who are really good at what they do are A+

I like epistolary fic, third person, lush writing, sparse writing, most things inbetween, details of a person or place that makes me feel like I know them, plot and character pieces both. Weather references, dark brooding tension/atmosphere, light breeziness, secrets between two people. Oh yeah, and explosions.

Exchange specific likes: Food! I love food as an act of care - one person making food for another, food as refuge or symbolism. Detailed descriptions are lovely but not necessary for enjoyment, I'm more interested in how the characters are feeling. I like cooking as a joint activity, one person who is a bad cook attempting to make the other person something. I like alcohol being involved either as a garnish or a story focus. I like unhealthy foods and healthy foods alike, and have no objections to food moralisation if it's in keeping for the characters, equally I am interested in disordered eating and food as a method of control. Although feeding kink is a DNW, I like feeding/cooking as a physical act of care for another person or concern for their wellbeing.

Porn likes:

switching, comeplay, slightly more than comfortable penetration (toys, large cocks etc), sex pollen or other fuck-or-die scenarios, blowjobs, scar touching, hair tugging, choking/breathplay, shaving (anywhere, but especially face), shower sex, fight/sparring sex where they're both into it,

Supernatural, Sam/Dean. Sour, Spicy

I love how interesting their canon relationship with both each other and food is. I am very happy for them to be happy (and indeed would prefer that their relationship is one of love regardless of everything else), I'm just not looking for uncomplicated happiness regarding for example Dean making Sam a homecooked meal in the bunker. There is lots of potential here for angst I think. Sam in particular has a super complicated relationship with food and nutrition, I think it's interesting that canon tends even now to have him prefer healthy foods - is this a left over from Stanford, something that he's always had, maybe the threads of disordered eating as a method of control in a life that's almost completely without it? There's loads of potential here for a lot of darkness as well - the nourishment of demon's blood for Sam, the vanishing enjoyment of human food for Demon Dean. I'm also really interested in stories that touch on Dean in particular's approach to alcohol and his (debatably canon) potential functional alcoholism. As an aside, one thing I am definitely not looking for is fic in which Dean/Sam deals with quitting alcohol or with worsening levels of alcoholism, I'd prefer canon levels of drinking if alcohol is included.

Ideas (feel extremely free to ignore these and to write anything that inspires you! They're just bounce off points.)

- memories of childhood food and how those memories have shaped them both as adults - the possible lack of food, the poor quality/nutrition, complicated feelings for them both about Dean's attempts to provide for his brother, and John's failure to do so on an ongoing basis.
- poor decisions around alcohol, maybe that's how they first hook up? Do one/either of them use alcohol as an excuse or as a way to dull their feelings about their relationship/hide behind it?
- demon blood as nourishment that replaces or supplants food/alcohol as either a craving or that renders enjoyment of those things to a minimum.
- foods eaten along the road, junk food, diner food, food made by Dean in the occasional motel kitchenette, fast food, Sam failing to be able to cook anything good.
- coming back from Hell or Purgatory (for either one of them) and having to get used to eating again

Art specific: everything above stands for art as well - but things I would especially love to see is location-based art with Sam/Dean - them in a diner with a favourite food, leaning on the Impala with a beer or a burger, whisky-drunk together in a hotel room, anything with distorted images of nurturing/care - for example Sam drinking straight from Demon Dean as a blood source or Sam setting a table in hell for a banquet. I also love art that plays with symbolism, but all art is great.

The Terror (TV 2018) , Captain Francis Crozier/Commander James FitzjamesGenre: Sour, Spicy, Sweet

Food in this canon is an absolute minefield and I love that! I've requested all variants here, so feel free to go as sweet and dark as you like. Obviously cannibalism is a thing in this canon, and although I would generally prefer both Crozier and Fitzjames not to be participants in eating human flesh, if that's where the story takes you, I am happy to read it. There's loads of potential here for both during-canon fic and post-canon fix-it of all flavours. Crozier and Fitzjames are more likely to be eating the food than cooking it of course, but I would love to see moments of exceptions to that rule - of course we have the canon moments, but anything like that would be amazing as well - Fitzjames maybe sharing a small forgotten delicacy from his personal stores with Crozier, them both heating their meagre food together, trading flat looks and snide undertoned small-talk over a glass of wine pre canon-events. Of course anything that takes place post rescue also opens up an amazing avenue of food and drink - I would absolutely love anything that deals with their shared healing using food or the restoration of their bodies/minds. For something a little darker, maybe post-rescue Crozier turns back to the bottle to cope with the inevitable PTSD or Fitzjames can't stomach food properly.

Ideas (feel extremely free to ignore these and to write anything that inspires you! They're just bounce off points.)

- Learning to eat again on the way back home after rescue, Fitzjames maybe struggling more physically and Crozier more mentally
- A moment's peace together during canon, either onboard or offship, where they can share food together and maybe warmth as well
- Back home where they can indulge completely and with each other where nobody can see them (bad food manners a plus)

Art specific: everything above is good for art as well, but for art in particular, I would love to see them in small huddled spaces together - whether that's in a cramped Captain's cabin, a tent on the tundra, anything that pulls in and focuses on them together would be amazing. Grim banquets would also be really cool, too much choice for them (or too little if you wanted a darker look).

The Favourite (2018), Sarah Churchill Duchess of Marlborough/Abigail Hill Masham, Sour, Spicy

These two are my favourites, and I absolutely love how dynamic their relationship it is - the push and pull, the seediness and grubbiness of their wants/needs especially when contrasted with the high state and ceremony of the queenship, especially the nastiness of their manoeuvring for power. Food and drink provides absolutely perfect metaphors for these two, and there's a lot of material to work with in canon - not just around the Queen's sad/sordid relationship with food and weight, but the ways that Abigail and Sarah contrast each other - Abigail the enabler, Sarah the judger. I would love to see more of that dynamic, the sense of Abigail as the face of indulgence - whether food, drink, cruelty, power or sex, and Sarah as the restraining force. This is a great canon for vast banquets, for food as symbolism and drink as an disinhibitor. Also you know, as many cups of tea as you'd like to work in. Include or exclude the queen as much as you'd like, I am happy either way. Regarding the DNWS: I am OK with minor weight gain for this canon only, although please not sexually driven. Things like Abigail finding it more difficult to lace up her bodice etc or Sarah taunting her with becoming a mark ii of the queen once she's handed the ability to act as she wants. Equally feel free to have Abigail insulting Sarah for her restrained appetites and deriding her as having lost because of that. Canon divergences where Sarah remains at court while still in disfavour, or scenes during canon are all good.

Ideas (feel extremely free to ignore these and to write anything that inspires you! They're just bounce off points.)

- During canon Abigail orders an immense banquet on the queen's behalf as a power play to show Sarah just who is in charge.
- Anything that touches on Abigail's deprivation before canon and how it fuels her appetites during canon
- They have a truce like moment where they drink/eat together, and Abigail demonstrates to Sarah exactly what she does to the queen

Art specific: anything for the prompts above or things like either of them licking wine off the other. I'd particularly love anything that plays with their relationship and dynamic - things like food or drink being seized from each other, or Sarah's response to Abigail's debauchery.

This was a fun little exchange called We Die Like Fen (multi fandom flash exchange with a very fast writing signup/time). I didn't sign up, but I did pinch hit and also managed to write a treat.

The pinch hit was for Original Fic - I wrote for the prompt Lonely Farmhand/Creepy Scarecrow and posted it under a pseudo-sock here. No points if you guess the origin of the username. I've written plenty of non-fandom stuff in my life, but I've never tried writing fandom tinged Original Work before so it was a nice experiment.

Below are the recs for the things I've had a chance to read so far from the same exchange. All f/f and nothing is super long so very bite sized for maxiumum convenience and enjoyment!

contract tenderness from each other like a disease MCU, Gamora/Nebula, I've always loved these two and this is a lovely look at some themes of life and destruction from Nebula's POV.
Stochastic Convergence, Annihilation, as weird as the film, a super interesting post canon look at how things have changed, and the many and multi faceted layers of both being and performing being.
Narrative, Little Women/MCU crossover , Jo March/Valkyrie. I would never have thought of this in a million years, but I love the story of Thor as told through Jo March and it's also quietly sexy.
the shining of you, Raven Cycle, Blue/Persephone, nothing better than a short little fic that gets everything it wants and needs to say into the word count. This is lowkey horror and I would read a ton more.
Exit Wounds, Original Work, female werewolf/female hunter, sexy dark fic about a hunter who is hunted in their turn by a werewolf from their past.

Smut4Swap Recs

Yeah, yeah, nothing for years and then I'm back for recs. Lots of good things in the collection, although unfortunately I don't really know many fandoms. Obviously everything below is NSFW

kerosene dream - Fight Club - Narrator/Jack - this is such a good Fight Club fic and captures so much of what I liked about the film, that sense of dreamy floating insomnia interspersed with how the Narrator's brain tricks and double tricks itself. Definitely recommend, in particular for the Reader Digest appearance as well.

Both of the Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell fics are absolutely excellent. There's The Adoration of the Earth which has sex pollen and tentacles and extremely cheeky books and also A spell for discovering light in darkness which has Jonathan Strange strung up naked for Mr Norrell's horrified delight and the shock of Martin Pale's bust. They're both lovingly written in a light pastiche with a great deal of fun and undercover character moments. If you know the canon at all they're both worth a read.

[ART] Original - Peccavi - monk/beautiful young novice who is actually the devil - stunning piece of monochrome art with gorgeous detailing that fits the prompt so perfectly. I'm an especial fan of the shadows and the complicated expressions.

[ART] Doigt Dansant - Atomic Blonde - the posing in this is absolutely lovely, and I particularly like the contrast of the two figures, one pulling in and one pushing back. Also it's just really hot and the details are so pretty.

Strong, Dark Grind - Nescafé Gold Blend Commercials. Yes the fandom is what you read, this is a funny little twist off from the classic coffee advert, playing off the bits of the character's lives that we saw with flashes of humour that made this a delight to read especially with the voice kink and the coffee.

There are not enough fics in which the revelation of the tentacles is greeted with such outright delight and this fills a gap. It's a lovely mash-up of pastiche, sex-romp and a little bit of horror.

SPN Masquerade

I ended up writing three things in total which is more words than I have written in about two years. Thanks to the organisers for such a fun festival. I still need to type up a rec or two more when I get the chance.

SPN Masquerade initial recs

If there's one thing that remains consistent across time and space, it's that I love me some recs.

First Batch of Yuletide Recs

I've been ill this Christmas but on the plus side that has meant that over the last two days I've had time and space to read through a bunch of Yuletide fics and highlight a few of the ones I've really enjoyed. I'm about halfway through the fandoms (I read in any fandom I know canon for) so there will probably be a second list though I may not finish in time for reveals. Anything that is over 10K I tend to come back to at the end. If your fic is on the list and not yet commented by me, rest assured I'll get there.

Snowflake meme: Day 7

Day 7: Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or check out some fanworks that are new to you. (The recs from Day 2 might be a good place to start.)

This is probably the most difficult one so far! I honestly wasn't sure how I could stretch myself without venturing into reading for fandoms without knowing the canon. I can't vid, draw or do anything even remotely clever with my hands. I write and read in all kinds of fandoms, across all kinds of kinks and pairings so it was hard to find something new within that, and I'm a very slow consumer of canons (if they're not books) so I didn't feel I could legitimately claim that either

But here goes a few small things

1) Thank you snickfic for reccing The Haunting of Hill House. I'm only three episodes in, and I am loving it! I'm just so sad that Yuletide is done
2) Thank you to spatz for reccing District 13. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time I was watching it - what action sequences! It whetted a long-standing enjoyment of really well done action films.
3) I'm in the process of writing for three new-to-me fandoms, two of which are absolutely mini, for the purposes of fandom_stocking. So even though they're not finished, I am absolutely counting that.
4) I waded into a book discussion space (classiclitclub) which while certainly not new to me, well it's always been a long time since WI've done that
5) I've read some lovely fic as a result of the recs of this challenge, and I have a little pile of bookmarks that I need to get back to and start leaving comments.

This is easily the most difficult challenge so far which is truly ridiculous really! But I just don't really visit many fannish places outside of heavily fic-oriented communities (even then mostly exchanges) and personal journals. So I was scouring my brain for ideas and coming up with absolutely nothing. A browse through my internet bookmarks however yielded the things below and I hope some of them are of some use. They're more resources than communities.

I haven't had nearly as much chance to read as much fanfic as I'd like in the past year, but what I have read has been amazing. There's no theme uniting these - they're simply individual pieces that I enjoyed a great deal and that I think no matter the size of their audience, could always use one more look. The only criteria I tried to keep to was that I had to have read them this year (not necessarily made this year)
