That sounds really interesting - I've never heard of that book, but I will definitely check it out! I can also definitely relate to what you say about the disparity between things you love and things you are fannish about. My own favorite book is Hermann Hesse's The Glass Bead Game, but I definitely don't interact with it in a fannish way.
