Death by peanut (what a way to welcome new friends to a flist) and also podfic/art recs

Thank you to the people who volunteered to beta - I appreciate it a ton. I've been remiss in getting in touch, partially because I accidentally almost ate a peanut. Which doesn't sound a big deal, but I'm  pretty deathly allergic when it comes to peanuts, so I've spent more time than I care to think of drinking gallons of water, brushing my teeth over and over, and hoping that I don't get a delayed reaction. Which all sounds rather dramatic, only my epi-pen is now out of date, so given where we were at the time it would have been a two hour drive to the hospital. I don't count myself cheap enough to prefer to die rather than buy one, but it rather felt like that. Tomorrow I'm buying one, because I don't think I can cope with that amount of terror over again.

Keeping an eye on myself still just in case, but I haven't swollen up like an over ripe fruit so I'm probably okay.

In other more cheerful and less death defying news (I swear my life is lurching from one crisis to another), I have to advertise this because it is terrific.

[livejournal.com profile] badbastion podficced the fic that I wrote for last year's Sam/Dean MiniBang (The One Left Behind), and it is amazing. I rarely listen to podfic although I've enjoyed specific podfics by specific podficcers. This absolutely changed my mind though on seeking more out. Badbastion has such a wonderful voice, soothing and with exactly the right emphasis. I really recommend any podfics that she's done, just based on this one. And not only that, [livejournal.com profile] milly_gal did a gorgeous cover to it as well - which got everything I wanted to get across about the story - the mood, Sam and Dean together, John the overarching influence, and which really works with both the podfic and the fic.

You can find the masterpost for it here, with both[livejournal.com profile] badbastion's podfic and [livejournal.com profile] milly_gal's artwork!

A second rec (yes, before I've listened to it) for [livejournal.com profile] applegeuse's podfic of Last Outpost of All There Is, because a) applegeuse and b) Last Outpost of All There Is which is one of my fav fics ever.

Dang!! That is super scary :-( New epi-pen is a must (reminds me to check ours - it is easy to lose track of when you've never had to use one).

It is so easy to lose track! I actually got a prescription for a new one, forgot to fill it, and now I can't find the prescription D: a little bit scary when it gets brought home how serious it is.

Yeah, it's easy to be lulled into complacency. My kids are super-aware, but accidents happen.

Oh if you are going to save money on anything, DON'T make it your epi-pen!

[identity profile] stripytights.livejournal.com 2015-06-17 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
You are absolutely right! I'd put off getting the new one because they're quite expensive, but first thing tomorrow. Never having a day like this again.

Death by peanut would be a goddamn disgrace!

For what it's worth, you can still use your expired epi in a bind. Always good to have a non-expired one, but the expired will work. Half the meds we had on Velociraptor Island were expired, epi among them, and we used them because they still work. There were studies done on I think nitro, which is one of the least stable meds, that found it to still be 95% effective for, oh, two years past expiration date? I'm repeating someone's words, I haven't seen the studies myself, but the point is, your epi is still good if you end up really needing it before making it to the ER. Someone in the Velociraptor EMS was trying to get her old hospital back home to donate expired meds, because we could totally use them.

I have to admit, having that in my obit would be disgraceful. Immortan Joe shouting MEDIOCRE is pretty much how I feel about that - my trip to Valhalla definitely cancelled.

Cheers for the tip - very useful knowledge that. Mine is a couple of years old, but I'll keep it anyway, just in case. Does no harm to have a few floating around. I'm excellent at controlling my allergy-ridden carcass, haven't had a full-on reaction since I was a kid, so I've got careless I think.

I hope you enjoy :D

Thanks very much for the recs, I'm going to dip my toe into the waters as regards it.

DEATH BY PEANUT.

not as uncommon as you'd think.

gurl, go get yourself a NON-EXPIRED EPI-PEN STAT. (still there, in a pinch, you jam that expired needle into your thigh like there's no tomorrow)

seriously.

Death by peanut is not the way I want to go, how are my family supposed to carry on a feud with a peanut dammit?

Good advice on the epi-pen front. That is my task for today, acquire one, by hook, crook or application of money.
