Still making my way through at the pace of a snail, but here are 4 more recs of things I loved, before creator reveals tonight

on a dime, DCU: E, Harvey/Bruce, This is a really amazing look at Harvey and Bruce, both individually and together. It's definitely readable without comics knowledge - I only really know the Nolan films and it made perfect sense to me. It's an insight into a manipulative Bruce and an already unstable Harvey with the seeds of Twoface already there, lashings of class war, hot sex and a fantastic back and forth between them in terms of who holds the power. Definitely worth a read if only for the knowledge that the best way to irritate Harvey Dent is to order him brunch.

Kings and Desperate Men Henry IV/Hal, E, Henry IV Part 1  Another one where you don't need much more than the basic historical understanding of who Henry and Hal are and their relationship (father/son) though the fic is even better if you do know the canon. This is a bleak semi-medieval look at punishment/penance and self-delusion. The sex is hot and bleak, but the real interest is in Henry's self justification of how he rationalises the use of his son.

The Revelation of Brother Eadwine Scriptorium Monk Drawing Dirty Marginalia/Monk in Charge of Illumination Project  E, Original Work. This is a delightful medieval story that is beautifully described and gives little backstories to the marginalia we know from manuscripts. The perspective character is a ton of fun, but there's also a lot of emotion to it. Definitely no knowledge of canon needed of course! There's also links to the marginalia at the bottom for some aid in picturing them.

a hatchet with a handle, The Folly of the World, E, Jan/Sander. I don't even know canon for this (though I plan to pick it up) and while I feel that it's probably even better than it already is with canon knowledge, I still really enjoyed it. This is brutal and vicious and definitely heed the tags because they're very literal (yes, it's swordfucking) but the descriptive, visceral quality of the prose is top notch, and the relationship between the two characters is fascinating.

The Rare Male Slash Exchange collection has just opened - can be found here

There's a glut of good things, enough that I'm not even close to finished reading, but here's a few of the ones I've really enjoyed so far.

The History Boys, Equilibrium, The Sting, Snowpiercer, Heat, A Bit of Fry and Laurie, The Scarlet Pimpernel and Dracula )

Pledge, Snowpiercer, Curtis/Edgar, Explicit. Canon divergent Snowpiercer fic that builds on the world of the film into something as cruelly survival driven and even more human. The relationship in this is so sharp, and Curtis's thoughts so perfect, and the fic draws itself together into something completely inevitable.

Heart Attack Man, Heat, Vincent/Neil, Explicit. Another fic I didn't even know I'd been waiting for! It slots neatly into the world of Heat, but more than that, both Neil and Vincent get wonderful character moments, on top of a really hot sex scene that illuminates the potential nature of the relationship between them. Vincent's dialogue in particular was pitch perfect, but the whole fic is a great read.

All In, The Sting, Johnny/Henry, Mature. Two conmen trying to fool each other and themselves, it's a tale as old as The Sting, and this is a superb addition. There's all that history between them, and the author flips expectations so deftly and with such a lot of emotional impact. The tension is really well dealt with in particular, and there's some really lovely period touches especially in the dialogue.

'Tis Well to Be Bereft, A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Control/Tony, Teen, as funny as the Control/Tony bits in canon, the speech patterns are perfect, the relationship is perfect, the overdone metaphors are absolutely in keeping with canon - well wroth a read.

A grab-bag of recs from the last few days - not even close to a comprehensive list. These are all from very recent exchanges (Juletide, Little Black Dress and Eat, Drink, Make Merry), except for the one Skins fic right at the end which is from 2011.

Fandoms: Captain Marvel/Thor, American Psycho/Mr Robot, Birds of Prey, Midsommar, Blade Runner 2049, Skins, Hannibal, Earthsea

This was a fun little exchange called We Die Like Fen (multi fandom flash exchange with a very fast writing signup/time). I didn't sign up, but I did pinch hit and also managed to write a treat.

The pinch hit was for Original Fic - I wrote for the prompt Lonely Farmhand/Creepy Scarecrow and posted it under a pseudo-sock here. No points if you guess the origin of the username. I've written plenty of non-fandom stuff in my life, but I've never tried writing fandom tinged Original Work before so it was a nice experiment.

It's Lonely in the Fields (4708 words) by OldSportSquared
Rating: Mature
Relationships: Original Male Character/Original Male Character, Lonely Farmhand/Creepy Scarecrow
Additional Tags: Scarecrow on Human Love, bring your own tags, the farmhand has brought his own booze, Coming In Pants
Summary: Simon's been alone a very long time. The scarecrow has been alone even longer.

I also had super fun writing a little treat for Oasis RPF. It grabbed me instantly and had to be boshed out. Thanks again for the super inspiring prompt [personal profile] snickfic!

you and I are going to live forever (2055 words) by StripySock
Fandom: Oasis (Band)
Rating: Mature
Relationships: Liam Gallagher/Noel Gallagher
Additional Tags: Cocaine, Recreational Drug Use, First Kiss, The Early Years - Freeform
Summary: It suddenly seems of great importance to remind Noel that they'd killed it out there tonight, taken the bull by the horns and shagged it, even with the elation fading away, the thrum of the evening settling down to a steady hum in his bones. It's half the fading remnants of the over priced powder, half the electric thrill of being on stage.

Below are the recs for the things I've had a chance to read so far from the same exchange. All f/f and nothing is super long so very bite sized for maxiumum convenience and enjoyment!

contract tenderness from each other like a disease  MCU, Gamora/Nebula, I've always loved these two and this is a lovely look at some themes of life and destruction from Nebula's POV.
Stochastic Convergence, Annihilation, as weird as the film, a super interesting post canon look at how things have changed, and the many and multi faceted layers of both being and performing being.
Narrative, Little Women/MCU crossover , Jo March/Valkyrie. I would never have thought of this in a million years, but I love the story of Thor as told through Jo March and it's also quietly sexy.
the shining of you, Raven Cycle, Blue/Persephone, nothing better than a short little fic that gets everything it wants and needs to say into the word count. This is lowkey horror and I would read a ton more.
Exit Wounds, Original Work, female werewolf/female hunter, sexy dark fic about a hunter who is hunted in their turn by a werewolf from their past.
Little Butterfly, Original Work, princess/female barbarian warlord [noncon] pretty much exactly what it says on the tin

stripytights: (Default)
Yeah, yeah, nothing for years and then I'm back for recs. Lots of good things in the collection, although unfortunately I don't really know many fandoms. Obviously everything below is NSFW

kerosene dream - Fight Club - Narrator/Jack - this is such a good Fight Club fic and captures so much of what I liked about the film, that sense of dreamy floating insomnia interspersed with how the Narrator's brain tricks and double tricks itself. Definitely recommend, in particular for the Reader Digest appearance as well.

Both of the Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell fics are absolutely excellent. There's The Adoration of the Earth which has sex pollen and tentacles and extremely cheeky books and also A spell for discovering light in darkness which has Jonathan Strange strung up naked for Mr Norrell's horrified delight and the shock of Martin Pale's bust. They're both lovingly written in a light pastiche with a great deal of fun and undercover character moments. If you know the canon at all they're both worth a read.

[ART] Original - Peccavi - monk/beautiful young novice who is actually the devil - stunning piece of monochrome art with gorgeous detailing that fits the prompt so perfectly. I'm an especial fan of the shadows and the complicated expressions.

[ART] Doigt Dansant - Atomic Blonde - the posing in this is absolutely lovely, and I particularly like the contrast of the two figures, one pulling in and one pushing back. Also it's just really hot and the details are so pretty.

Strong, Dark Grind - Nescafé Gold Blend Commercials. Yes the fandom is what you read, this is a funny little twist off from the classic coffee advert, playing off the bits of the character's lives that we saw with flashes of humour that made this a delight to read especially with the voice kink and the coffee.

ETA to add three more!

Blood is Thicker
  - vampire/vampire's sister, original fiction in which twin sisters navigate their new and changing relationship, smoking hot smut combined with lovely subtle ways in which the relationship has changed between them which gave it quite a sad feel at the same time.

A Lexicon of Kisses - Gaila/Uhura, Star Trek - sex pollen! With Gaila being coolly knowledgable and Nyota on the edge with a lovely dash of humour and get together.

Excerpts From The Private Journal of Lady Amarantha Price, later the Baroness L’Encornet
, OFC/OFC with tentacles. There are not enough fics in which the revelation of the tentacles is greeted with such outright delight and this fills a gap. It's a lovely mash-up of pastiche, sex-romp and a little bit of horror.

If there's one thing that remains consistent across time and space, it's that I love me some recs.

So here are a few of my favourites so far from what I've perused of the SPN-Masquerade, while they still remain anon. I'm working through the pinboard so I haven't even had near a chance to look at everything. This was a marvellously productive round with some lovely fanworks. It's also got me writing for the first time in an extremely long time, so I'm looking forward to cleaning up and posting a couple of things.

ART
https://spn-masquerade.livejournal.com/10986.html?thread=4308970#t4308970 - Jared in stockings and thigh highs, doesn't need much more of a description than that but deserves one. Absolutely lovely, and there's a superb hard/soft theme going on between the muscle and the lingerie. More than worth a click.
https://spn-masquerade.livejournal.com/10986.html?thread=4065258#t4065258 - WITCH SAM. I love everything about this, the detailing of the grimoire, the hair, the tattoos, this is gorgeous!
https://spn-masquerade.livejournal.com/10986.html?thread=4106986#t4106986 - cheerleader Jared. This is just everything, especially the pigtails, the legs, and the totally ridiculous costume.
https://spn-masquerade.livejournal.com/10986.html?thread=4240874#t4240874 - Danneel/Gen. I am just in love with Gen here in particular, the little arch of the foot, the hair, the look on her face, and also the colours of the whole piece.
https://spn-masquerade.livejournal.com/10986.html?thread=4285930#t4285930 - look this has otters in it, I'm already gone. So incredibly cute, and the otter is the star of the show!

FIC
https://spn-masquerade.livejournal.com/10986.html?thread=4340970#t4340970 - Sam/Castiel, tie-kink - I think this is one of my favourite fics I've read so far this year, let alone in this round. Cas's viewpoint is bleakly, fascinatingly off-kilter, and Sam is perfect. There's just so much to dissect that it's one to read a couple of times over. Just really awesome work all round.
https://spn-masquerade.livejournal.com/10986.html?thread=4251882#t4251882 - Apocalypse, Sam/Dean, and in the space of one comment box this played merry havoc with my emotions, plus a final line that kills
https://spn-masquerade.livejournal.com/10986.html?thread=4196330#t4196330 - Sam & Dean, deeply unnerving and with more than a little fridge horror to it. There's a reason Sam keeps getting sick. Going to remember this one.
https://spn-masquerade.livejournal.com/10986.html?thread=4316650#t4316650 - super cute J2 fic where Jared rescues dinosaurs, Jensen is a literal fairy and this entire thing happens in space. Funny, cute and hot as well.
https://spn-masquerade.livejournal.com/10986.html?thread=4306154#t4351722 - Dean/Sam medical kink with Sam cleaning up Dean's abrasions, with some lovely sensual touches and a lot of quiet tenderness as well as kink

I've been ill this Christmas but on the plus side that has meant that over the last two days I've had time and space to read through a bunch of Yuletide fics and highlight a few of the ones I've really enjoyed. I'm about halfway through the fandoms (I read in any fandom I know canon for) so there will probably be a second list though I may not finish in time for reveals. Anything that is over 10K I tend to come back to at the end. If your fic is on the list and not yet commented by me, rest assured I'll get there.

This is easily the most difficult challenge so far which is truly ridiculous really! But I just don't really visit many fannish places outside of heavily fic-oriented communities (even then mostly exchanges) and personal journals. So I was scouring my brain for ideas and coming up with absolutely nothing. A browse through my internet bookmarks however yielded the things below and I hope some of them are of some use. They're more resources than communities.

Day 5: In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them.  )

Day 2

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

I haven't had nearly as much chance to read as much fanfic as I'd like in the past year, but what I have read has been amazing. There's no theme uniting these - they're simply individual pieces that I enjoyed a great deal and that I think no matter the size of their audience, could always use one more look. The only criteria I tried to keep to was that I had to have read them this year (not necessarily made this year)

Fandoms beneath the cut are: Supernatural, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Lord Peter Wimsey, The Wire )
stripytights: (Default)
Find 9 Yuletide recs beneath the cut! This is only my first quick pass through the archive so I'm looking forward to lots more gems, especially since as I don't read big-for-Yuletide fandoms until after I'm done with everything else. So The Charioteer, The Terror and a few others are going to wait until I have the mental fortitude.

stripytights: (Default)
I mentioned in a different post that I've pretty much been reading all year. I have an hour commute to work each way, where I read, I usually read in other slots of time as well, and I read really fast so 150 books in a year wasn't a big stretch.I reread a lot, because I comfort-read certain books to exhaustion. Below is a list of nine great reads of 2018. Not the nine best, because I read technically better books that weren't included for one reason or another. So much closer to say that it's nine good books I recommend, than my ten favourites. I've tried not to include rereads at all so this is fresh and new, with one exception. I read plenty of non-fiction as well, so there's a couple sprinkled in. There's a surprising amount about religion in all different forms - nuns, cults, fundamentalism etc. Under a cut as this got long.

The Terror by Dan Simmons.  )

OK, anyone who knew me on LJ possibly already knows that I love recs. Specifically making them. I love reccing fic and I love reccing books. Sometimes I even like reccing music. My plan in the few days leading up to the new year, in the wake of the friending memes etc was to demonstrate this readiness to flog anything and everything to everyone like a cut-price salesman with too much stock.

And I'm going to. I have a list of ten books I've loved this year. Ten fics I loved. Ten songs that got me dancing.

And then I considered the obvious corollaries. Ten best films. Ten best TV shows. Ten best music videos. And not just came up short, but woefully short. I have completely fallen out of the habit of visual media by going back to that first/best comfort of books. I probably only watched ten films this year. T.V. shows wise I probably only watched five. Max. It's been a terrible year for finding new visual canons is what I'm saying.

So, before I start spamming with my recs for the things I love, I'd really love to hear the things you've enjoyed this year that involved actually watching them on the small or big screen. I can't promise I'll watch them (see above) but I am desperate for some new things, and willing to try. I'll give anything a go with only two minor caveats. One, I find it really difficult to watch long shows. If something has already been going for 100 episodes, I'm very unlikely to ever catch up. Two, prominent rape plotlines/backstories are not something I'm interested in.

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I chose three works that I just plain old like for different reasons. They're not my favourite things written or my defining fics. They're just ones that for different reasons were extremely enjoyable to write.

I finally got round to reading some of the fics - I didn't even get to my gift until late. So I went on a commenting spree and also a mini reccing spree. I'm not close to done yet, especially with the longer fics, and some of the art. Please do comment on the things that you enjoy.

First off, this is the lovely gift that I got from [livejournal.com profile] sophiap. Two of my highlighted likes were: Medieval AU (which is a concept I am far too invested in, and I mean really invested in) and Sam's face, and this delivers in spades. There's a whole story behind that image that leaves me intrigued, and also wanting to know exactly which supernatural event (or french attack) has Sam looking so tired and grim. Leave the artist some love :D

My own fic was the aptly named oh sea-starved, hungry sea (Sam/Dean) which was my attempt to articulate how post s6 Sam and Dean might alternately reconcile some of the problems they just won't talk about

I finally got a chance to read through some of Yuletide last night, so here's my first rec batch (I like to try and get done before the anon period finishes). Apparently this is the year of the femslash! Speaking of which, I was lucky enough to get a very sweet Emily of New Moon story with a gentle Ilse/Emily bent to it, which can be found here

In no particular order have recs in the following fandoms: Cruel Intentions (1999), Badass Queens RPF/12th Century CE RPF, Malory Towers - Enid Blyton, Calamity Jane (1953), Once and Future King Series - T. H. White, Animorphs - Katherine A. Applegate, Ballet Shoes - Noel Streatfeild/ Swallows and Amazons - Arthur Ransome, Villette - Charlotte Bronte, Black Mirror, Singing in the Rain

This was originally a moan post about the bronchitis that has laid me up, the ever stranger pereginations of my family, and a bunch of other things. But, I feel like I've complained a lot this year, and I want to end things on a high note.

So on that note, I offer my traditional scurrying in late to be the last person ever to get round to doing a meme (it's definitely a tradition by now) and if you've made a post of your own, please do point me at it so I can spread/share the love.

holiday love meme 2015

and I also include the happiness recs. Right now, as I metamorphosise into a person more tissue and soup than human, I gladly and freely acknowledge that apparently this is the Winchester brothers cuddling cats or being cats who then get cuddled. Most of these are pretty well known, but that's no reason not to share them again.

Care and Feeding - fools_game This is the jackpot of cuddling cat fic. Sam gets turned into a cat. There's several stories worth - it ends in Wincest, but the majority of the stories are gen. Sam's POV in this one
Scratch - lazydaze  touch deprivation + cats + quiet comfort. No more needs to be said.
Winchesters + cute cats - de-nugis  This time Dean gets a cat cuddle
When You Think He's Half Asleep - this is Dean as a cat, infuriatingly Dean. Fewer cuddles, but still enjoyable.
I did have more cat cuddling recs, but my inability to tag my bookmarks properly is biting back. I also don't know where I acquired this gif, so apologies for no credit, but it's very relevant

stripytights: (Dean and Sam)
I haven't had a chance to read all I wanted to, but I'm anxious to get a few recs up before anon period comes to an end! So here's a sample of things I've enjoyed.

Art
Mad Max style, J2, (by quickreaver also found here) This is a perfect meld of Mad Max and J2, and the colouring works so well, plus the hair choices and proportions. Lovely.
The Boy with the Broken Halo, (also by quickreaver and found here) Sam, this is amazing and it really bounces off an unusual prompt in an interesting way - the Sam is so recognisably Sam, and yet so changed and confident and alive that it's a real question-poser in terms of how this Sam evolved.
fire fighter Jensen, (by dephigravity and also found here) super adorable picture of Jensen + puppy, with a look on his face that is even cuter than the puppy.
Steampunk Masquerade, J2, (by amber1960 and found here) lovely details - not just with the faces but the clockwork bodyparts, Jared's ponytail, the watch, the tongue and all the rest, as well as telling a real story.
Fic
Exceed His Grasp, Sam/Dean, This is beautiful and really gets across not just the physicality between them, but also the awareness of the divide - the final two lines are real killers.
two-legged muscle pickers, Sam/Cas, (by de_nugis and also found here) probably the most creative fill of the round for me - the true form sex is interesting and subtle, and the whole story feels layered and purposeful, and I very much enjoy Sam in it.
This Gentle Sin, Sam/Dean (by saltandbyrne and can be found here) this is incredibly hot - the visual imagery and the way it's used, and Dean's reactions to Sam's reactions, as well as the little hints of the compromises they have to make is awesome.
Dimples, J2 I love the affection and hotness of their established relationship, and I think we all love the dimples, so match made in heaven.
Catch Hell, Sam/Dean, (by indiachick and can be found here) I'm not much of a one for serial killer fic, but this has a finesse and a beauty to it that I appreciated very much - especially the brotherly edge, and the subtle interplay between them.
shaving, hair washing, Sam/Dean (by laughable lament and can be found here) two of my favourite things, and I really liked the relationship painted here and the neat way around their feelings - the unacknowledged weight of them, and the rising potential of more.

What have I missed/what do you recommend?
stripytights: (Dean and Sam)
Thank you to the people who volunteered to beta - I appreciate it a ton. I've been remiss in getting in touch, partially because I accidentally almost ate a peanut. Which doesn't sound a big deal, but I'm  pretty deathly allergic when it comes to peanuts, so I've spent more time than I care to think of drinking gallons of water, brushing my teeth over and over, and hoping that I don't get a delayed reaction. Which all sounds rather dramatic, only my epi-pen is now out of date, so given where we were at the time it would have been a two hour drive to the hospital. I don't count myself cheap enough to prefer to die rather than buy one, but it rather felt like that. Tomorrow I'm buying one, because I don't think I can cope with that amount of terror over again.

Keeping an eye on myself still just in case, but I haven't swollen up like an over ripe fruit so I'm probably okay.

In other more cheerful and less death defying news (I swear my life is lurching from one crisis to another), I have to advertise this because it is terrific.

[livejournal.com profile] badbastion podficced the fic that I wrote for last year's Sam/Dean MiniBang (The One Left Behind), and it is amazing. I rarely listen to podfic although I've enjoyed specific podfics by specific podficcers. This absolutely changed my mind though on seeking more out. Badbastion has such a wonderful voice, soothing and with exactly the right emphasis. I really recommend any podfics that she's done, just based on this one. And not only that, [livejournal.com profile] milly_gal did a gorgeous cover to it as well - which got everything I wanted to get across about the story - the mood, Sam and Dean together, John the overarching influence, and which really works with both the podfic and the fic.

You can find the masterpost for it here, with both[livejournal.com profile] badbastion's podfic and [livejournal.com profile] milly_gal's artwork!

A second rec (yes, before I've listened to it) for [livejournal.com profile] applegeuse's podfic of Last Outpost of All There Is, because a) applegeuse and b) Last Outpost of All There Is which is one of my fav fics ever.
stripytights: (Dean and Sam)
First, and in a room all of it's own, there is my gift which is gorgeous. I am all out of words, but it is just distractingly wonderful - Sam/Dean bruised and battered but still completely together, caught in a moment of absolute peace. This art is holding my heart hostage. You can find it here When all is said and done and you should definitely leave it love.

Additional recs from when I'm catching up

- Postlapsarian, (Cain + Abel, gen) Probably my fav gen fic so far. This is haunting, clever and has a controlled force to it that'll linger with you. It made perfect sense for Cain, and felt like an extrapolation of his shown motivations mingling with the Bible.

- Various methods of escape (Jared/Jensen) This is amazing, Jared and Jensen bantering their way through a difficult situation, with just a razor's edge of awareness of each other to give it a real spark.

- Car Wash (Sam/Dean) This is how I want to spend my Sunday afternoon. Not just watching Sam and Dean have a water fight, but with anon's OCs who are natural, funny and provide a great look in.

- Director's Cut (Jared/Jensen/Danneel) Hot and lovely, so much friendship and play between them, making the sex seem natural and fun.
stripytights: (Dean and Sam)
[livejournal.com profile] spnspringfling is posting! I'm reading my way through when I get a chance, but here are a few recs to start off with. I haven't even read close to everything that's posted though, so it's just the start.

As always, if you have any recs for things I should read, please put them in the comments!
