It was a rather ghastly fic in that respect, sorry! I'm glad you felt the ending fitted.
They're still legally-bonded because bond-breaking is illegal where they live- so admitting their bond is broken would be admitting to a crime. However I suspect they'd tell Jeff, so working together would be fine, and they wouldn't have to live with each other if they didn't want to.
