Day One

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I picked each of these for a different reason but I think all three of them together epitomise what attracts me to writing fic. Specifically my yen for rarepairs and my love for difficult relationships (in this case specifically Sam/Dean.) I'm not really fussed about things going easily, I'd rather some conflict.

Marked in Deep, SPN, Tamara/Jo, tattoos (NC-17)

This is one of my rare fics where I can bear to reread it because although it's flawed, there's not much about it that I'd choose to change. It's not about love but about tiny minute quantities of closeness between two people who've never met before. And tattoos.

Stoop and Build (With Worn-out Tools), SPN, Sam/Dean, gencest (rated R)

I wanted to include a Sam/Dean fic on this list. Unfortunately it's a case where I want so badly to write it well, that sometimes I don't see any worth in what I do write. This one works for me despite it being deliberately platonic mostly because there are lines in it that I really like and a claustrophobic atmosphere intentionally created, that I think came across.

In the Darkening Day and Ignore the Setting Sun because they function together I think. SPN, Victor Henriksen/Castiel, (both rated R)

I picked these because sometimes something clicks in your mind and you think yes that works, I wouldn't ever have thought of it if I hadn't seen a prompt, but it took my mind over, and without wanting to go full Tim Gunn I think I made it work. Doesn't hurt that it's post-apocalyptic Endverse which is never going to ruin anything for me.

Day 2
In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1. [livejournal.com profile] salt_burn_porn, a tag writing challenge. I've only participated once but I had a great deal of fun in doing so, and I absolutely love seeing the results of what everyone writes in such a short space of time. Well worth browsing through the rounds. (SPN and SPN RPF)

2. http://hadrian6.tumblr.com/ which posts several pictures a day of classic works of art. Generally with an Ancient Greece/Rome bent to it, I appreciate seeing these pop up on my dash.

3. The following are more resources that I've recently found useful and/or interesting. Timeline of foods eaten at various points/places in history, timeline of slang terms for the penis and vagina respectively. Database of weapons featured on TV/film (handy for SPN), collected basic medieval reference posts   the 100 funniest moments of America's Next Top Model. You don't need to watch the show.  Proof that when academics wank/sockpuppet they one-up fandom 'When Dickens Met Dostoevsky

Day 3

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser-known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom who maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

I have no wings and I must fly - yhlee. Fandom: I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream - Harlan Ellison, rated E for horror. (1353 words)

First off, I've probably already bored everyone by overreccing this but it was one of my favourite Yuletide fics, and my current favourite example of just how much you can fit into a relatively short space. Readable without canon (although canon is only a short story which can be found here and with a tinge of true horror.

Birds fly south - [livejournal.com profile] justholdstill. Fandom: Harry Potter, rated R (4737 words) Hermione/Ron/Harry, Ron/Harry

I don't read this one too often because it tugs at my heart strings every single time. It's a bitter, sad little look at how relationships falter and fail. It started with a premise I was not inclined to enjoy or even read (a threesome shattering, one person left alone) and it traced it beautifully while still keeping all three recognisable.

Best of Days - Mercurie. Fandom: Classical Greece and Rome History & Literature RPF. Rated G (6161 words)

A magic-realism take on a day in the life of Emperor Tiberius. Beautifully put together, quiet, a little sad, not at all bogged down in research but balancing history really well. Not treated especially well by history, here Tiberius is given depth and power and speech.

Very Superstitious - novembersmith. Fandom: Generation Kill, rated PG-13 for language, Ray and Poke gen (3000 words)

This is one of my favourite GK fics for excellent reasons. It feels as canon-compliant as the script and it digs down a little deeper without ever appearing to do so, like it saunters along and kicks up some dirt and makes you actually think about what's going on. Voices are spot on, especially Poke and I'm very fond of it.
