Second bunch of recs (still in the anon period, go me!)

I haven’t actually read nearly as much as I’d like - I’m saving a few of the longer fills for next week. But here are a few things I couldn’t not mention first. As always I've linked to the prompt thread so check all kinks.

Also, as always, anything you think I should read, please stick it in the comments, I'd be grateful!

First batch of masquerade recs, I probably won’t get to the second before the anon period has finished.

My original plan for this was a fandom manifesto about the things I love about SPN. I wrote enough of it to be worth posting but then I had a better idea. SPN (and SPN RPF) is for me a) the show - which means enough to me that I get a little bit sappy and b) the fanworks created which I love.

So while I still want to do that fandom manifesto (it'll be up on the 24th), I realised I'd also like to do a more personalised project. So I went through my flist and picked a fanwork by each person who does fanwork. Mostly they're Sam/Dean and J2 but there's some very notable exceptions included. A few people I found it difficult - not because they're not fantastic creators but because I'm a total wuss in this fandom so any one reading this feels like the piece de resistance of their oeuvre has not been represented, that may be why! Blame my non-Elizabeth-the-1st-stomach.

There's a few non-SPN folk on my flist and in those cases I've picked a favourite fan-work by them that's non SPN. There's also a few folk no longer in the fandom and I hope they don't mind me including their past works.

It's done alphabetically of course!

Epic fanwork list )

I'm skipping around these until I can get a scanner for my stick figure posts. [livejournal.com profile] amberdreams asked me what my three favourite fics were, in a cruel cruel move since picking three favourite fics was not an easy task. Picking thirty favourites would be difficult enough! In the end I picked three stories that have stuck with me for some time.

The first one is a tricky one. From the Other River Bank - Dwimordene, LotR. Frankly, I haven't reread it in many years. It could actually be terrible - it might well be since as far as I remember, I read this in 2003 when I was in my early teens and my taste in fiction could best be termed 'mixed'. But it's one of the few fics that I've always loved the memory of, and I remember it as being very beautiful and absolutely 100% heartbreaking, all while being possible (as much obviously as it can be possible) within the canon timeline of pre-Lord of the Rings. Part of the reason I don't reread it is because I don't want to be disappointed I think.

I do still remain perpetually amused that it was the author's response to being challenged to write a slash story, because I'm sure there's some progression where it makes sense that someone who'd never written slash would choose Boromir/Faramir to start with!

Last Outpost of All That Is - gekizetsu. Obvious answer is obvious I know, but this is my perfect id story. Not just the post-apocalyptic, only-Dean-and-Sam elements, but the slow and powerful build. There's nothing of the romp about it, by the end their relationship and their life seem as inevitable as anything can be, and this is a fic that I reread when I get the chance. I have a great deal of time for it, and it was probably the easiest contender to put on this list. I love the rest of gekizetsu's fic as well, but this is the one I remember and rec to other people not in the fandom (who all, without exception love it as well).

Okay picking a third fic was impossible. I was going to cheat my little socks off and list ten possible contenders or just start listing off authors I love, but then I suddenly thought - there will be future memes, there will be future rec posts. I don't want to shoot all my bolts. I shall save them up. So instead, while I wouldn't call this a top three favourite fic, have a rec for a fic that makes me laugh every time I read it (and I like to laugh).

It's lolitics RPF, but though the jokes are funnier if you know UK politics at the time this was written (2010) it's still damn funny even if you don't. No pairings, just jokes. It's archive-locked to AO3 so you'll have to be signed in to see it. So here it is Once Upon a Time in the North - British politicians + the apocalypse.

December meme? Oh you mean that December meme? I joke, I've mostly kept up with doing the entries so I'll start posting tomorrow. Before that though, it's recs time.

I posted some previous minibang recs here and I have two more!

Behold, A Pale Horse - [livejournal.com profile] cherie_morte. This is a love story right at its core, beautiful, dark and riddled with hopeless sadness and yet at the end of it all, that intense sense of love and inevitability that always traces Sam and Dean's footsteps. I don't think I've read anything quite like it in a long time (do heed the warnings). I wholeheartedly recommend reading it.

Edges - [livejournal.com profile] glovered. This is also heart-touching but in a completely different way. Sam's stretched thin and fading connection with his brother, the slipperiness of the understanding between them, the sadness of Brady in the background and that crushing knowledge of what waits for them all - the title is perfect, because even when there's light in the story there's the future waiting. It was a fantastic mix between the two.

Other fic

see - [livejournal.com profile] steeplechasers. True forms. Clever true forms combined with crystal sharp description, and a sense of loss and loneliness in how Dean feels towards Castiel's true form and the changes it goes through. Love it.

You'll No Longer Burn - songlin. I can count on one hand the number of times I've read genderswapped Dean and liked it, and this is one of those times and possibly the only het fic veresion. There's something unapologetically harsh about this conception of Dean and how their family dynamic would be even more messed up that really worked for me, although the story is mostly sex.

To the Devil his Due by [livejournal.com profile] monicawoe Wonderfully disturbing Endverse, with all the touches of survival and hope at the beginning, fading into a deeper darker Lucifer and the Sam he's taking back.

What I Wouldn't Do - dollylux Gen/Danneel femslash. With a wonderful sense of place - an absolutely loving portrait of a neighbourhood and a mood, and a great sense of physicality between them, something that seems to go missing in a lot of femslash. I really liked this a lot.

Art

Art for [livejournal.com profile] cherie_morte's SDMB by quickreaver, found here. It's stunning, the colouring used in particular, but also the posing of Sam at the end, like some marble statue carved perfectly, and the one of him with blood running down his lip that's giving me strong Art Deco vibes in the construction of Sam's hair, and yeah pretty much all of them. I rarely rec art because I lack art vocab to describe it but these are all perfect.

"...so darkness I became." - [livejournal.com profile] cassiopeia7. Okay, I am always going to be a sucker for Pieta style SPN art, and this is no exception, and then to follow it up with Demon eyed Sam crying was perfect, a real sense of story across the two images ( a story I would love to read) and the look on Sam's face in each is heartbreaking. Plus bonus Bela, which I am always appreciative of - especially one again with a story behind her and a magnificently creepy hand. I do love a piece of art with a palpable sense of narrative to it.

Vid rec

Crazy - by justmep. Demon Dean, the song works perfectly in conjunction with the voiceover clips, and yeah, I did love some Demon Dean and this was just really good. I've watched it about ten times now I think.

I'm going to get started on my December meme tonight but I can't resist posting early with a rec for my [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_xmas gift because it's awesome. Take a ton of my favourite things (post-apocalyptic/Sam'n'Dean/alternate ends/stoic warriors) and put them into a giant blender and you basically have my gift. It's hopeful and has a great show feel to it and I recommend it absolutely. Thank you so much [livejournal.com profile] amberdreams for really starting the holiday season off with a bang, you're terrific.

Title: Second Verse, Same as the First
Author: amberdreams
Characters: Sam Winchester, Lucifer, Dean Winchester, Risa, Chuck, Cas
Word count: ~5800
Rating: Gen R
Warnings: Character deaths and resurrections as per canon. Kind of.
Summary: The End AU. In this version, there is no trip to the future for Past!Dean. Sam said yes, Dean said no, and though Dean found the Colt, his attempt to kill Lucifer with it failed. So now Dean is going to try Plan B, and lead a small team to face Lucifer again. The story is told from Risa’s point of view.

Find it here, read and love

I'd been looking forward to this fest for some time, and although it didn't go quite as I'd hoped in terms of my own fic (which, because flogging a dead horse is excellent exercise you can read here), I always appreciate getting to read new fic by other people - the best bit of being in a large fandom!

So here are a few recs (for fic because I'm pretty terrible with art recs - there was a lot of lovely art though!)

- Your Children Will Come at You with Knives by [livejournal.com profile] steeplechasers- the most visually striking piece of the challenge for me, there was a fantastic sense of terrible inevitability and a beautifully muffled depiction of manipulated emotions and fear. Definitely recommend.

- Juxtaposition by [livejournal.com profile] moonyj4m - super tender take on a slow growing closer through shared beds and shared closeness. Really well paced and the slide from (mostly) platonic bedsharing into their relationship was perfect.

- Heaven Sure Ain't Like It Is In The Brochure by [livejournal.com profile] righteousbros - wonderful use of canon in particular Dark Side of the Moon, a perfect fixing of all the untied ends. Very sweet and warming. I'll take a slice of that with a cup of tea please.

- The Treadmill by [livejournal.com profile] amber1960 As well as fix-its, I adore fics that fixes things without that being the central core of the story - in this one there's a (intriguing) plot, there's Sam time and then this wonderful resolution that ties it up neatly and ends on a hopeful note. Lovely.

- Five Times the Winchesters Pretended They Didn’t, and One Time That Didn’t Work by [livejournal.com profile] runedgirl - there may be a theme to these recs (with the exception of the first one!) and this is no different - there's a slow build relationship that I can only describe as pretty - the descriptions, the emotions and then the ending that unites all the different threads into an understated but real happiness.

This is my favourite thing of today (crack fanmix for The Iliad) find the tracklist here. My favourites are Book 18: The Shield of Achilles — Build A Bear Workshop theme and Book 8: The Tide of Battle Turns — This Aint A Scene. Also the fight between Ajax and Hector being set to the Confrontation from Les Mis.

Ages ago, pliny wrote me Sam Winchester poetry in response to an ask meme where you had to reveal what you'd learnt from osmosis about something you've never seen it. I rarely remember to log onto Tumblr so here it is. Pliny is awesome at poetry and suspiciously spot on about Sam. How can you not love something that's funny and sad at exactly the same time.

I put my Sam h/c prompt fill up on AO3 here: under the waters still and deep and also my spmc entry: Don't Shoot the Sacred Symbol

Sam & Dean Minibang post-date tomorrow. I feel nervous though not for any particular reason.

This is going to sound really stupid and I have been on lj for far far too long to only ask this now but how do I format a fic post entry so it returns to lj's default when you click instead of retaining journal formatting. I'm pretty sure I've seen it done - possibly using =light at the end of the URL.

I will never ever make it as a stockbroker. Playing on the stock market with virtual money gives me the shakes, the thought of actually chucking millions of pounds around terrifies me.

I am also not signing up for [livejournal.com profile] spn_reversebang even though I really want to and there's a gorgeous art prompt that is calling me. Must stay strong. I am however signed up for [livejournal.com profile] salt_burn_porn and excited about it.

Fic rec: I strongly recommend this DCBB fic Enfleurage by [livejournal.com profile] saltandbyrne. D/C generally isn't my jam but this is Sam/Dean/Castiel and it's beautiful. It's not only beautiful and an interesting Cas POV, but it has a great cast of supporting characters (Meg, Bela, Jo in particular) and a marvellous sensuousness to the description of the perfumes and all the other things that Cas can smell. Well worth the read.

Yuletide is here! There are so many good letters (check out the letters post here) and it's a very fun exchange.

Thanks[livejournal.com profile] tebtosca and [livejournal.com profile] riyku for running [livejournal.com profile] spn_masquerade - I've had a great time reading through it all. Unfortunately I happened to be away on holiday for the majority of the meme time so I only managed one fill - The Terminal Point of Addiction (Sam/Dean) for a prompt that could have been written for me to grab (thanks OP!) and still only just finished it in time. There were some glorious prompts that I wish I'd gotten to though.

One thing I keep meaning to do (and forgetting) is to rec more often. Recently I haven't been reading much because there's too much going on, but I've been slowwwly working my way through [livejournal.com profile] spn_masquerade. Hopefully at some point I'll be able to start making my way through the Big Bang fics, which really is a surfeit of amazing.

Initial recs can be found under the cut. I've mostly linked to people's journals if they've claimed them.

Everyone should go here and prompt/fill for Sam's birthday meme.

I filled a gen prompt about Sam gazing at herons called 'the sun upon the lake is low'. The title is nicked from Wordsworth Sir Walter Scott. I found the prompt particularly inspirational given the quantity of herons who live around these parts.

I highly recommend the art fill for the same prompt by [livejournal.com profile] quickreaver which you can find here

I was going to save my recs for after reveal, but I don't want to wait that long to rec the fic I received. So part two of Spring Fling recs now that I've read most of my way through (not all the way but if I waited for that I would never ever rec anything). Bonus stick-figure art created in Paint for anyone who guesses what I wrote. Here's a clue. It's poorly punctuated.

Star Rec: All That Is Gone this is my gift and it is Sam/Cas and absolutely beautiful. It does a great job picking apart some of Sam's emotions about possession and being overridden. There's something especially chilling about the concept and the ending. Thoroughly recommend.

- Air and Earth - J2, you feel the pain of unrequited love and the sense of freedom generated by the ending is amazing. I want more, but the ending in itself is enough.
- Still Waters - Jess/Jo, femslash and banter and a really really cute fic.
- Confidential - J2, ART, I love the coloring of this and Jared's expression and the great sense of a whole story.
- All the Lonely People - Gadreel gen. Thoughtful and interesting. Made me reconsider the character.

In other news, enforced idleness from being sick as a dog makes me productive. I wrote a J2 rowing AU for salt_burn_porn (it turns out, researching after the fact, that American college rowing seems to be a bit different than college rowing here so apologies for the clearly non-American-ness of this) and my own take on soulless Dean for smpc which I know must have been written before a lot but I've never read one so it seemed like fun.

In other other news. You know what's a really poor idea? Blindly grabbing for a bottle of shampoo in the shower. I'm usually about this shade. Now I am. Turns out that products not belonging to me that claim to eliminate brassy tones and make your hair naturally lighter might actually work. I've been wearing a slouchy knit hat this whole weekend and looking like a tool.
stripytights: (Dean and Sam)
Leaving this one unlocked, because recs. I've been reading my way slowly from the beginning using them like miniature incentives to actually do job apps. I haven't read nearly everything that I want to read so take this as my initial sample.

Our Last Summer - Jared/Jensen/Gen. ART. I want to roll around in this hayfield, because not only are the bodies and the way they touch so tender and beautiful, but the background is lovely as well and really evocative.
Coronation Day - Kali/Abaddon. ART. Cutest art eva. I love their poses and how Abaddon reminds me of the blond one from The Princess and the Frog, while Kali makes the most fantastic genie. Really fun and rather wicked.
Three Things - Sam/Kevin. This is great Kevin headspace, nothing shy and retiring about his inner life, just fierce and very very tough. The bits inside his head were convincing and made me happy at the ending.
Turntable - Jared/Jensen Hot, fun and action-packed, what more could you want? Jensen is suitably taken-aback at Jared's transformation and it all leads to a very satisfying place.
Starving - Sam/Dean. I really like the mood of this piece. It's contemplative, the time-gaps work as a way of indicating how Sam drops in and out,
Ardere - Sam/Jess ART. This has a great sense of mood, and really gives a story and so many possibilities. I especially love the colouring.

A Song of Ink and Fire - Sam/Dean ART.  This is probably my favourite thing of the exchange so far. Inked beautiful boys, and the closer you look, the more the tattoos will tear up your heart. From the DNR on Sam's chest, the Dean on his fingers and the Virgin Mary on Dean's back, it's visually stunning.

Day 7
In your own space, create a fanwork. A drabble, a ficlet, a podfic, or an icon, art or meta or a rec list. A picspam. Something.

Ficlet about Ruby, demons and meat suits. Warning for some gore. )

Day 8
In your own space, create a love meme for yourself. Let people tell you how amazing and awesome and loveable you really are.

I think I'm gonna skip this one. Maybe during summer when I'm livelier. I find it an emotionally draining exercise to put myself out there.

Day 9
In your own space, rec at least 3 fanworks you thought you wouldn't like (because they weren't your fandom or they pushed against your boundaries or you thought you just wouldn't be interested) but you ended up loving.

I wrote One Thing After Another for [livejournal.com profile] chemm80 which was Gen/Adrianne (where Gen becomes a super-spy!), which was not only fun to write but proves once again that my greatest weakness is tropey femmeslash. Seriously, All the Tropes please.

and I got an absolutely lovely story for [livejournal.com profile] spnspringfling

It can be found here: Sweet Abandon and it is Gen/Adrianne which is one of my absolute favourite pairings and not only that, but it's in space which is in my top two AU scenarios of all time. It also happens to be sweet, fun and have great character voice so I thoroughly recommend checking it out.
